Busting Myth: People with COVID-19 Must Eat Alkaline Foods

Social Media is flooded with information that pH level of the novel COVID-19 virus is between 5.5 to 8.5, and in order to get rid of it, people must consume alkaline foods.

What Do Experts Say?

Experts from University of California state that a virus itself does not have a pH.

According to medical science, pH is something that is applicable to a water-based solution, and virus is definitely not the one. Also, it is not possible that a diet can change the pH level of your blood cells or tissue. The body regulates pH levels, it’s not something that a person would want to change.

Besides, the human body is approximately 20 percent acidic and 80 percent alkaline; with a pH of between 7.35 to 7.45. When the blood becomes too acidic, disease starts to set in. If the blood acidity falls as little at to 7 pH it can be life threatening.

“There are no foods that you eat that can change the pH of your blood” According to Melanie McGrice, Dietitians Association of Australia. She adds “If foods did this to any extent and your pH fell outside of the tightly controlled normal range, your cells would stop working and you would die very quickly if left untreated.”

Why Alkaline foods Are Important in your Diet?

Alkaline foods help in countering the risks of acitiy and acid refluxes and bring relief to the body. They are a part of balanced diet that helps other nutrients to work actively and keeps acidity under control.

While the claim that alkaline food can kill the novel virus is completely false, it is suggested that one should have alkaline foods daily to keep the concept of balance diet intact and prevent acidity and related digestion issues.
