Divyanka Tripathi On Changing Dynamics In The Industry, Mental Health and The Power Of Kindness

Divyanka Tripathi, an Indian television actor got recognition in the television industry with Zee Tv’s popular drama, Banoo Mai Teri Dulhann in which she essayed a dual role. Before getting the big break, the actor won India’s Best Cinestar’s Ki Khoj from the Bhopal zone and also won the title of Miss Bhopal in 2005. But, Divyanka never had acting as her career preference.

She always wanted to be in the army. She enrolled herself in the Bhopal Rifle Academy where she won two medals in rifle shooting. Apparently, destiny had a different plan for Divyanka. Cinestar Ki Khoj opened the doors of the small screen for her. And, after Banoo Mai Teri Dulhann there was no turning back for the actor. Once the Zee Tv show went off the air, Divyanka tried her hands at comedy before getting back to the saas-bahu drama. In 2013, she once again became a star with Star Plus’s Yeh Hai Mohabbatein in which she is seen in the role of Dr. Ishita Bhalla. On 8 July 2016, she got hitched to her Yeh Hain Mohabbatein co-star, Vivek Dahiya.

Recently Divyanka was seen on Khatron Ki Khiladi where she emerged as the first runner-up.

Namita Nayyar:

Divyanka, often television actress is stereotyped with the kind of role they play, nowadays a lot of actresses have broken this stereotype image of a “bahu”, your comment on the same

Divyanka Tripathi:

As far as actresses breaking the stereotypes is concerned I try hard looking for a different subject but you can only do so much. You have to choose from the jobs available in the market.
All I do is give feelers of how I’m craving to portray an Indian woman as more powerful like she is in reality & hope to tickle creative senses so they write something dynamic.

Namita Nayyar:

Besides drama, you have also been part of reality shows, including your debut show as well, tell us about your recent experience on Khatron Ki Khiladi, also you were seen as the toughest competition there, how did you prep for the show

Divyanka Tripathi:

Yes, I have been a part of several reality shows. I have won only Nach Baliye to date, but that doesn’t stop me from becoming a part of these extraordinary concepts. I feel these shows are generally so close to reality that they enhance your overall personality & make you stronger as a person and in your craft.

I didn’t join Khatron with the intent of winning because I myself didn’t know my capacity then. Yet, I underwent an aggressive schedule of rehabilitation, fitness regime and followed a proper nutrition plan. I consciously remained very disciplined for those few months.
When I signed up for the show, I knew I wasn’t the fittest but I wanted to be better than my state then and wanted to finish the journey with pride. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration if I say, ‘today I feel like a winner and no one can take away this feeling of satisfaction from me because of the hard work & honesty I’ve put in.

Namita Nayyar:

Women Fitness India talks about celebrity diets and fitness regimes, do you take any special diets? How do manage your diet with your acting schedules and travel

Divyanka Tripathi:

I support a diet with a protein-rich and low-carb diet. I don’t believe in crash diets. I feel you should choose a pattern that you can maintain for life.

When I am traveling or working I try sticking to times to eat and I try making responsible choices while ordering food. That itself keeps me on track.

Namita Nayyar:

Mental and physical fitness are equally important nowadays, what comprises of your fitness regime, how many days in a week do you workout

Divyanka Tripathi

I have some long-term injuries hence I work on other body parts while the affected one rests, but I don’t stop now.
Before, I used to train to shed weight. It was a continuous, disappointing struggle for me and the results were short-lived. Every injury and the break thereafter used to demotivate me.
After Khatron I had a tremendous boost in my self-worth. I realized my body type is never a hindrance, I am all capable, only my willpower needs to stay strong when dealing with my perpetual injuries.

Regular workout has become a very important part of my life now. I do it at least 5 to 6 days a week. My regime consists more of muscle & bodyweight training and core strength.

Namita Nayyar:

Along with physical fitness, how do take care of your mental health? Do you meditate or journal writing?

Divyanka Tripathi:

For my mental health, I read and listen to motivational books or biographies. In fact, at times I even save the parts that impress me in my notes. One has found her or his own method that gives them mental calmness. It can be something as simple as listening to music or praying.

Namita Nayyar:

Social media is both a Boone and bane, you have a huge following of 18 million on Instagram, how do handle trolling and negativity

Divyanka Tripathi:

Social media is on a sudden boom in the last few years and as much as I detested it before, I can’t imagine myself without it anymore. If we reflect, this pandemic must be a lot smoother than the last century’s due to an effective relay of important messages and constant communication with loved ones thanks to social networking.
Every medicine comes with side effects though. Online trolling, fabricated information, issues are blown out of proportion is a common occurrence in my SM life too like everyone else’s. I just try not to ingest everything as it is being shown.
One must enjoy the life on internet without getting completely intertwined in it. A sense of responsibility and dignity are important here as well like any other place and if someone tries to mess with it, one must never shy away from confronting / blocking/reporting.

Namita Nayyar:

Divyanka you have been one of the most popular faces in the Indian television industry, nowadays OTT is the big thing do you plan to be part of that? Also your thoughts on changing dynamics in the entertainment industry

Divyanka Tripathi:

Every woman has the potential of being a nurturer and much more. There are layers to a woman that unfortunately remain unexplored to a large extent on TV and in Films due to maybe lack of creativity or fear of rejection by the masses.
OTT is taking a bolder step in that direction and its acceptance by the viewers is a clear indication that the older mediums must evolve with the audience else they’ll go extinct.

Namita Nayyar:

Divyanka you have mentioned in an interview that you feel shy to post pictures in a bikini, do you still feel the same, how would you react if a role demanded the same

Divyanka Tripathi:

When I make statements like that, please don’t believe me. I have contradicted myself many times in the past for the sake of work. Life is surprising and so am I. Who knows, what decision I’ll take tomorrow if the work demands.
