How The Travel Bug Bit Kamiya Jani? Let’s Get To Know!

Having been working since she was 21, getting married at 24, having a baby at 27, couldn’t stop Kamiya Jani from travelling to more than 38 countries.

She finally decided to drop her desk job and started a personal blog, Curly Tales, where she would recommend people places to go to and things to do. What started off as documenting her travels with family, creating videos and posting them on social media, soon turned into something bigger as she started getting paid to live her dream to travel!

Ever since starting Curly Tales in 2017, other than covering more than 25 places in India, she has also been to Czech Republic, New Zealand, Oman, Northern Territory Australia, Hong Kong, Turkey, Dubai, London, Portugal and the list goes on.

Let’s talk to the vibrant travel influencer and blogger, Kamiya Jani about her journey towards living her dream life.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You quit your full-time job in media, to start your own venture Curly Tales, tell us how did it all happen and how has the journey been for you now that you look back.

Ms. Kamiya Jani:

Everyone dreams of getting paid to travel. The real challenge is in executing it. I wanted to live the best life I could. And that was far from a 9-to-5 job. So I gave up my career as a business news anchor at a renowned TV channel to pursue what gave me happiness.

I am a nomad at heart and believe that if we were meant to be at one place, we would have had roots as opposed to feet. So, I started documenting my travels, and creating content on the places I visited and people I met on my travels in the format of 1-minute videos and short articles. That’s how Curly Tales was born.

I started in January 2017 and it has been the ride of a life time ever since. For me work is a holiday and holiday is work. Quitting my job to start Curly Tales has probably been one of the best decisions of my life and one that I take great pride in.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Being a Travel Blogger seems to be a dream job for everyone in today’s generation, tell us the pros and cons of being one.

Ms. Kamiya Jani:

There are so many pros to this that all the cons are worth it. Travelling for free is clearly the best one. But on a serious note, it’s all work. I don’t just go to travel and have fun, I travel to document my experiences and tell a story. It’s a physically exhausting job as I wake up to catch the first light of the morning and return to the hotel when there is no scope to shoot anymore. You gotta really love travelling to enjoy this.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What is one thing that you follow to be real on social media?

Ms. Kamiya Jani:

Always a good mix of professional life and a glimpse into my personal life too. While I talk about my travel expeditions, I also showcase my family life and how I strive to balance the two.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What are the main points you keep in mind when creating content on your website, YouTube etc?

Ms. Kamiya Jani:

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How successful have women been in shattering the glass ceiling in the Media & Advertising field?

Ms. Kamiya Jani:

I can’t speak for women in general but for me, I am glad it all worked out at the right time and the right place. Yes women are usually given lesser opportunities but I guess it’s about time it all changes.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have been to 38 countries, 108 cities which has been by far the best experience and what places are on your 2020 bucket list?

Ms. Kamiya Jani:

My best experience has been travelling to Thailand to create a series on friends who travel to Bangkok and Koh Samui. We had a big crew and there was a lot of fun off camera and on camera. It’s always about people over places. On my bucket list is Japan, Iceland & Spain.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You once mentioned that in India pregnancy is considered a disease, what were the challenges you faced when you were pregnant and had a baby, and how do you strike a balance between work and personal life?

Ms. Kamiya Jani:

Just being physically tired was one of the biggest challenges. As much as I have the drive to live it up always, I remember a time in Turkey, when I wanted to explore the town; I just couldn’t, as I was so heavy and tired. It was my 7th month of pregnancy. But I remember going into work till the day before my delivery. It was pretty smooth. I am glad everyone around made me feel as normal as possible. When the baby was born, first few days, every mom is very nervous as she is still figuring things but soon you understand how things flow. I chose a job that let me spend a lot of time at home. So my timings were 6am – 3pm so 4pm onwards I used to be with the baby. I resumed work after 5 months of having a baby.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Top 3 places that people can visit on a budget outside India.

Ms. Kamiya Jani:

You just need to find the right spots.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

With International Women’s Day approaching, whom do you call a Superwoman?

Ms. Kamiya Jani:

I find a superwoman in every woman. The one who is having 4 kids by choice or the one who chooses to stay unmarried all her life. I think what makes a superwoman is the will to stay true to their gut and take decisions.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

If not a travel blogger what would you be possibly doing?

Ms. Kamiya Jani:

I would probably be working as an anchor or a presenter.
