Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You were one of the youngest trained Stott Pilates instructor in the world at the age of 16, and by the age of 19 had completed all the courses on Stott Pilates. You are also a certified Barre instructor. Walk us through your incredible journey and tell us how it all began?

Ms. Namrata Purohit:

It began with a fall! An injured knee and a knee surgery left me in some pain and I was advised to stop playing some of the sports I played and stop dancing. I did some physiotherapy and strength training and although that helped I was not fine. Around that time my father was hosting a Pilates course in Mumbai, and I decided to do the course. 3-4 days into the training and my knee pain had vanished! I was back on the squash court.. a few more Pilates sessions in and my squash coach thought I was even more balanced and stable than I was before my knee injury. Pilates was like magic for me, I fell in love. My father too fell in love seeing as he too experienced the benefits and magic. That is when we decided that more people in India need to experience this magic!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Introduce us to a day in your life.

Ms. Namrata Purohit:

I wake up quite early to go horse riding atleast a few times in the week, if I don’t go riding on a particular day I am at the studio a little post sunrise. I spend the rest of the morning at the studio taking either pilates, pole fitness, barre, boogie bounce or electric muscle stimulation classes. I take a short break for lunch, take a few more classes till about 4pm, post which I look at the business aspect of the studio, or work on my YouTube Channel or go for meetings. Some days I have events to attend in the evening. I do dance class 3-4 times a week, since I cannot live without dance! On a good day I wrap work up by 6pm and then spend time with family and friends, and try to hit the sack as early as possible.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What exercises comprise your fitness regime or workout routine?

Ms. Namrata Purohit:

Pilates is my constant! I cannot live without it.. I also do pole fitness a few times in the week because it makes me feel amazing and strong. I do trampoline twice a week as it is the most fun way to get my cardio in and I do barre and EMS once a week.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Tell us about the food/meal routine that you follow to remain healthy and physically fit?

Ms. Namrata Purohit:

I eat at regular intervals to ensure I don’t get hungry and then crave or eat whatever is within reach! I think that is the most important thing. And ofcourse I stay hydrated and drink atleast 3 litres of water a day. Breakfast is my main meal and I have a nice filling healthy breakfast.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

How would you explain that Pilates as an exercise form helps in leading a fit & healthy lifestyle?

Ms. Namrata Purohit:

Pilates was started during World War II for men at war and then transformed for ballet and contemporary dancers. So when you do Pilates you get the strength and endurance of a warrior and the flexibility, balance and agility of a dancer. It is like getting the best of both worlds! Pilates is also an extremely safe form of exercise, as there is no impact on the joints and the chance of injury is almost zero. Anybody and everybody can do and enjoy Pilates!

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

What would be your 3 Do’s & Don’t’s for someone who’s just beginning to learn Pilates?

Ms. Namrata Purohit:

–> Do ensure the trainer or studio you join is recognised and qualified to teach.
–> Do train with a trainer and preferably using the Pilates equipment as well.
–> Understand the form and ideology behind an exercise, as this is a mind body form of exercise.

–> Do not rush the training, the first few classes are the most important to understand the basics.
–> Don’t overtrain, Pilates works big as well as small muscles in the body. When done right it is an extremely challenging form of exercise. There is a popular saying, “Pilates is easy, until it is done right’
–> Although Pilates is like Magic, do not expect miracles. Nothing can work without a good balanced nutritional plan.

It is a book that encourages people to “Get Smart, Get Moving’! It is a fun book that gives you many different exercise routines that can be done at home as well as talks about different exercise forms their benefits and the approximate calories burnt during those routines. The book is a guide into the world of fitness, understanding food, the meaning of strength training, cardiovascular exercises and so forth.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Being the Pilates Instructor to Actress Jacqueline Fernandez, how has your experience been being her trainer? How do you manage to make her workout during outdoor shoots?

Ms. Namrata Purohit:

She is one of the most amazing people I have worked with. She is like a sponge, she literally soaks in all the information given to her and applies it well to her routine. Jacqueline is a complete Pilates girl! She is someone who doesn’t need to be reminded to workout, even when she is travelling she ensures to go to a local gym, or studio in that area or even do exercises in the room.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

Would you like to tell us about the changing scenario of fitness in our country over the years?

Ms. Namrata Purohit:

It is great to see more and more people trying to actually understand what fitness is about. I feel like people want to learn, they want to know more about their body and want to be ‘fit’ and not just look good, which is a much needed evolution that we are seeing. There is still a long way to go in India but there are lots of people part of the industry who are trying to get educated, be well informed and spread correct knowledge.
