Ms. Namita Nayyar:
You started your journey with TV commercials, and went on to become a household name with your well-acclaimed show “Beintehaa ”, but you never wanted to join Bollywood …why was that?
I started my journey as a model because that was a childhood dream… which was fulfilled by the grace of God as I ended-up shooting for more than 50 advertising TV commercials and print campaigns. I did South movies to test the waters of cinema and to see if I really enjoyed working in the movies because Bollywood was too huge a platform to use as a testing ground. I also did film-journalism alongside South movies but I very quickly realized that South was not a place I enjoyed working in. I didn’t find it safe to work in South and I decided to quit the South industry for good in 2013. In 2014 Amitabh Bachchan was doing the TV show Yudh and Anil Kapoor was doing the series 24…Salman Khan was hosting Big Boss and every Bollywood actor wanted to be a part of Television in some way or the other because they realized the huge reach it had.
So when I got the offer to do a prime time 9 pm series Beintehaa on Colors … I grabbed the opportunity because I was a fan of a show on Colors. Although the working hours and the format of television was hugely demanding … I still enjoyed the fact that the pressures in so many other departments were nowhere close to Bollywood. I had got offers from Bollywood biggies like Pradeep Sarkar post-Parinita, Kumar Taurani, Vashu Bhagnani, and others for a Bollywood debut… but I was very clear in my head that I did not want to do Bollywood because by 2008 the demands of Bollywood has changed drastically.
Contracts demanded the actresses to leave all inhibitions, don bolder and revealing clothes and shoot for intimate scene romantic scenes without any hesitation! – All this was out of my comfort zone! Thanks to my sister… I had an insight into Bollywood and every time I got a movie offer I would literally get cold feet because they were big people! But once Television happened… I was very happy with my decision to debut on the small screen…and by the grace of God my show was hugely popular and continues to globe-trot in it’s dubbed versions in countries like Indonesia, Turkey, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, South Africa, East Africa Tanzania, UAE, etc and is regularly getting me a huge share of international popularity. So I am very happy with the choice I made.
