Namita Nayyar:

You are an Indian plant-based sports nutritionist and body transformation specialist. Please share your journey to choose this line as your career.

Roshni Sanghvi:

I was studying to become a psychologist before I entered the nutrition industry. However, a family setback forced me to stop my education and move from the US to India. My father was sick due to bad lifestyle choices. We had a lot of trouble finding the right treatment and care for him. This inspired me to professionally study nutrition and the role of nutrition in disease reversal.

Namita Nayyar:

There is a big misconception that one needs to consume animal sources of protein (eggs and meat etc) to get adequate protein in one’s diet. Can you clarify this and how plant-based protein can serve well?

Roshni Sanghvi:

Plants have all the nutrients you need, including proteins. Plant-forward diets help in promoting longevity, and disease prevention and even improve gut health! More and more athletes are now switching towards eating more plants because it not only serves your protein requirements but also helps with faster recovery, lower inflammation rates, and improved immunity. We rarely look at nutrients individually, like animals for their proteins. We must look at food as a whole. Besides proteins, does your food have anti-oxidant agents, phytonutrients, immune-boosting properties, etc? Plant-based eating style is holistically good for the system.

Namita Nayyar:

You have trained yourself in alternative therapy forms such as the Wim Hoff breathing method and QiGong meditation. According to you does effective breathing and meditation help in healing and prevent weight gain? Also please tell our followers more about Wim Hoff’s breathing method.

Roshni Sanghvi:

Your overall lifestyle habits determine your weight. Let’s say I have bad circadian health and eat at late hours in the night. I will gain weight even if I am eating healthily and choose to eat a Kale salad at midnight. This is because your body is less efficient in storing food as fat in the morning, but becomes more efficient at the same by evening. Thus, one lifestyle habit- bad circadian health- will have a domino effect on other systems of the body.

The Wim Hoff method or QiGong, are healthy addition to your lifestyle because it plays a role in overall wellness and stimulates the vagus nerve. This helps with emotional management, gut health, boosting metabolism, and much more!

Namita Nayyar:

You have had your share of struggles with body image and weight problems in the past. Can you share your struggles and how did you finally overcome the hurdles?

Roshni Sanghvi:

I think most women growing up in India struggle with some sort of body image issues. I was overweight and very unhealthy myself. When I started studying nutrition, I felt I had no right to tell people what to eat if I was not healthy myself. But this drove me to work harder and transform myself first. My journey was very insightful as it makes me a better coach today. I have walked in my client’s shoes.

Namita Nayyar:

Can joining a gym help one lose weight? According to you 5 lifestyle and habit changes one needs to incorporate into one’s life to heal for better?

Roshni Sanghvi:

Any fitness form can help with weight loss. The important thing is to pick something you love and stick with it. Going to the gym alone is not necessary. But the best habit I insist my clients pick up is to maintain a healthy circadian cycle. Start, with sleeping before midnight, and waking up as close to sunrise as possible.

Namita Nayyar:

What sets you apart from other nutritionists and trainers who claim they are the best? Share more input?

Roshni Sanghvi:

As a team, we believe in holistic wellness. We don’t counsel clients for nutrition alone but help with habit formation, positive food association, intrinsic motivation, and much more. Nutrition and fitness are just one part of a much broader spectrum of services we like to offer our clients. This is thus very important to make long-term lifestyle changes that can last forever.

Namita Nayyar:

Tips on how one can reverse diseases like PCOS and Diabetes with diet modification and exercise.

Roshni Sanghvi:

Every lifestyle disease will require a different treatment approach. We work on improving three specific modalities, lifestyle modification, nutritional intervention, and goal-specific fitness regimen. Starts with fixing your lifestyle habits like sleep quality, morning sunlight exposure, meditation, daily step count, etc.

Namita Nayyar:

Myths that according to you need to be done away with surrounding diabetes and PCOD.

Roshni Sanghvi:

All are different diseases and attract different myths. For instance, diabetic clients are told not to have carbs when in reality they should avoid sugar. Vegetables, pulses, and whole grains are all carbs and indeed very important for diabetes management.

PCOD clients are told that they cannot conceive naturally. This is far from true. With the right nutritional and lifestyle intervention, one can have a healthy and natural pregnancy with PCOS.

Namita Nayyar:

Please share more on your daily health and fitness routine. Foods you must have and 5 foods you keep to the minimum?

Roshni Sanghvi:

I love exploring a variety of different fitness forms. I am currently doing a lot of pilates and even some running. I do find myself going back to strength training every few weeks as it is my stress buster.
I do not eat meat, dairy, or eggs at all. Avoid soda and maida.
