Did This Silicon Valley Startup Just ‘Hack’ India’s Favorite Drink?

Hack' India's Favorite Drink
India alone drinks 837,000 tons of chai a year—and its popularity is skyrocketing in the U.S. But it takes at least 10 labor-intensive minutes to brew an authentic cup—assuming you know what you’re doing and your milk doesn’t boil over. (No, Starbucks is NOT real chai.)

But what if tech could brew the perfect cup of chai—no work necessary?

Enter Chime [www.brewchime.com]—the world’s first authentic chai brewer.

Founded by Indian immigrants living in Silicon Valley, here’s how Chime is “hacking” chai:

> IT SLASHES BREWING TIME BY 200%

Chime’s twin boiler system boils milk and brews tea simultaneously, cutting down the chai-brewing process to 3 minutes without compromising taste (pro-tip: over-boiling tea leaves in milk leads to bitter chai).

>> SMART TECH BREWS YOU A COMPLETELY PERSONALIZED CUP

The Chime app creates your perfect cup every time by giving you total control over the brewing process—allowing you to customize the milk ratio, tea strength, mug size, and froth.

>> STREAMLINED CLEANING ALLEVIATES CHAI’S BIGGEST PAIN POINT

A 3-step cleanup that takes 30 seconds eradicates the most frustrating part of chai preparation (clean-up), while self- and deep-clean features automate the process of keeping your machine in great condition.

On a mission to simplify and bring back the authentic chai experience, Chime delivers the taste of home to South Asian immigrants and enthusiasts of all ethnicity. With high grade black tea sourced and packed in Assam, India, it allows Americans to enjoy a home-brewed cup with minimal effort.

How Chime was developed?

After leaving his family in India to work as a Salesforce engineer, Gaurav Chawla longed for his 3 daily cups of authentic chai—which his sisters lovingly crafted for him each day back home. He couldn’t find a good cup of chai anywhere in the U.S., and he knew the 3 million Indian immigrants in America were also missing their indispensable chai ritual.

So Gaurav quit Salesforce and partnered with his college friend and Cisco manager Samip Bhavsar to invent a chai machine that would save him hours of chai-brewing work, while simplifying a beloved ritual and bringing a taste of home to America.

After a prototype of the Chime authentic chai brewer placed on the Google and Dolby campus resulted in out-the-door lines, Gaurav knew he’d found a market for authentic, on-demand chai.

After 2 years of ideation (and forcing his family and friends to drink plenty of test cups), Gaurav has already pre-sold hundreds of units and will start shipping in January. Most importantly, his sisters are very proud.
