Drinking Soda Can Lead To Hair Loss

One beverage that’s talked about negatively impacting our health is soda – often due to its high sugar content. Some studies show that it could hurt our bodies and hair with as little as one glass of soda a day.

The consumption of Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), which has increasingly become prevalent in young populations, is associated with a higher risk of male pattern hair loss (MPHL). SSBs include sodas/soft drinks, juice with added sugar, sports drinks, energy drinks, sweet milk, and sweet tea/coffee.

Can Drinking Too Much Diet Soda Cause Hair Loss?

While excessive sugar isn’t good for your body, artificial sugar is just as much of a culprit when it comes to hair health. Artificial sweeteners (such as Aspartame) have been linked to hair thinning and loss.

When your body ingests these artificial sweeteners it produces toxins after processing them – including formaldehyde. It’s the formaldehyde in your body that damages the hair follicles and can lead to hair thinning and loss. So, while sugary drinks aren’t a great idea… diet sodas aren’t exactly a safe bet if you’re looking to preserve your hair health.

Does Carbonated Water Cause Hair Loss?

Carbonated water itself does not necessarily increase your risk of hair loss. That said, sweetened carbonated beverages do.

Sweetened carbonated beverages (like soda) inundate your body with simple sugars very quickly and, as a result, negatively impact your blood vessels and your body’s ability to interact with insulin in the blood. Carbonated water can be a suitable alternative to soda if it isn’t sweetened or contains ingredients that are bad for hair health.

Note that, what you eat can affect the health of your hair.

A lack of proper nutrients, including vitamins A, C, D, and E, zinc, B vitamins, iron, biotin, protein, and essential fatty acids, may slow hair growth or cause hair loss.
