World Psoriasis Day (Oct. 29): Take Up Meditation To Heal Your Skin

Meditation doesn’t only help manage Psoriasis—it’s also been proven to significantly increase the efficacy of psoriasis treatment.

Stress is one of the major triggers of psoriasis exacerbations—experts call it the “stress flare phenomenon.” The immune system responds to mental stress the same way it responds to physical stress—with inflammation. This inflammation triggers psoriasis to flare-up, which may create more stress—and so the cycle continues.

Regular meditation has been shown to change the way the brain processes and responds to stimuli—people who habitually practice meditation experience physical changes in the areas of the brain related to emotional regulation, empathy, compassion, perspective, anxiety, fear, and yes, stress.

By practicing meditation, you can change the way the body reacts to stress, preventing it from impacting them as strongly, and thus preventing the storm of inflammation that typically accompanies a stressful moment. This reduces the likelihood of a psoriasis flare-up.

Meditating for 30 minutes every day for eight weeks is enough to change the structure of the brain.

Vipassana meditation, is a good way of self-transformation through self-observation. It focuses on the deep interconnection between mind and body, which can be experienced directly by disciplined attention to the physical sensations that form the life of the body, and that continuously interconnect and condition the life of the mind. Vipassana Meditation has proven useful in the treatment of psychosomatic disorders like psoriasis and eczema etc.
