Holi is nearly here and even if we’re practicing social distancing, it doesn’t mean that we can’t celebrate , with healthy treats! One of the easiest ways to celebrate any festival is to get dressed up, spend time with our loved ones and of course, gorge on delicious food!
When it comes to cooking for the family, gone are the days when only a few members slave all day in the kitchen. Today everyone gets involved in putting a wonderful feast on the table. Everyone can do their bit, and when it’s a no flame recipe, even young kids can join in!
Here are some colorful and no-flame treats for kids to make, that involve no cooking, baking or heat of any kind. What’s more, these are made with healthy ingredients like fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, so you can all enjoy a guilt-free feast!
Colourful Non-flame Healthy Treats for Holi
1. Thandai Smoothie
Ingredients:
- 1 cup Chilled milk
- 1/2 tsp Homemade Thandai powder
- 1 tsp Dry fruits powder
- 1/2 cup Ice cubes
- 2 tbsp Vanilla ice cream (optional)
Instructions:
- Blend all the ingredients together till smooth.
- Serve chilled in a tall glass and garnish with some chopped nuts and rose petals.
2. Colorful Fruit Skewers
Ingredients:
- Black grapes
- Green grapes
- Bananas, cut into small pieces and dipped in orange juice
- Pineapple, cut into small pieces
- Orange slices
- Kiwi fruit, cut into small pieces
- Strawberries
- Melted chocolate
- 1 cup Yogurt
- 2 tbsp Honey
- ¼ tsp Vanilla extract
- Wooden skewers
Instructions:
- Wash the fruits well and pat dry with a kitchen towel.
- Thread the fruits on the wooden skewers and chill in the refrigerator.
- Fill the melted chocolate in a piping bag and pipe over the cold fruits.
- For the honey vanilla yogurt dip, mix the honey, vanilla and yogurt in a bowl.
- Chill for a few hours and serve with the fruit skewers.
3. Pomegranate Boondi Raitha
Ingredients:
- 3/4 cup Boondi
- 3/4 cup Pomegranate arils
- 1 cup Yogurt
- 1 tsp Roasted cumin powder
- 1/2 tsp Chili powder
- 1/4 tsp Chaat masala
- Salt
Instructions:
- Whisk the yogurt till smooth. Add water if the yogurt is too thick.
- Add the cumin powder, chili powder and chaat masala along with salt to taste. Whisk again.
- Add in the pomegranate and boondi and stir till well mixed.
4. Gopalkala
Ingredients:
- ½ cup Brown Rice Flakes
- ½ cup Curd
- ¼ cup Cucumber, chopped
- ¼ cup Apple chunks
- ¼ cup Pomegranate seeds
- 1 green Chilly, finely chopped
- 1 tbsp Coriander leaves, finely chopped
- 1 tbsp Sugar
- Salt to taste
Instructions:
- Soak the brown rice flakes in water with a pinch of salt for 1-2 minutes.
- Drain the flakes and soak them again in a little water (⅛ cup or less) clean water for 10 minutes. The rice flakes will absorb all the water and become soft. Drain again
- Add the curd all at once and mix well to blend the curd with the flakes.
- Add salt and sugar and mix it thoroughly so that it’s evenly distributed throughout the curd-poha mix.
- Add the chopped chillies, cucumber, apple and pomegranate seeds. Mix well and you are done.
- Garnish with coriander leaves and serve immediately.
5. Papdi Chaat
Ingredients:
- 14 pcs Homemade Papdi
- 1 cup Homemade curd
- 2 Potatoes, boiled and mashed with salt and black pepper powder
- ½ cup Mung sprouts (steamed)
- ½ cup Pomegranate arils
- 1 small Onion, finely chopped
- 1 Tomato, finely chopped
- 1 bunch Coriander leaves
- ¼ cup Sev (optional)
- ¼ cup Soriander mint chutney
- ¼ cup Dates tamarind chutney
- Salt to taste
- Black pepper powder to taste
- Chaat masala to taste (optional)
Instructions:
- Whisk the curd till creamy. You may add a little chaat masala or salt and sugar.
- Mix the chopped onion, tomato and cilantro in a bowl and season with a little salt.
- Take 2 serving plates and arrange 7 crackers/ papdi on each plate.
- Add a teaspoon of potato on each papdi, followed by 1 teaspoon of steamed mung bean sprouts and 1 teaspoon of onion tomato coriander mix.
- Add 1-2 teaspoon of whisked curd to each papdi. Top it with both chutneys as per taste.
- Finally, add sev and pomegranate arils and serve immediately.
6. Gulkand Dry Fruit Laddu
Ingredients:
- 1 cup finely chopped seedless dates
- 1/3 cup almonds
- 1/3 cup walnuts
- 1/3 cup cashews
- ⅛ cup desiccated coconut
- 2 tablespoon gulkand
- Dates syrup (optional)
Instructions:
- Take all ingredients except dates syrup in a mixing bowl. Mix well.
- If the mixture appears too dry, add some dates syrup.
- Refrigerate the mix for about an hour.
- Pinch out portions from the mix and roll into round shape balls using palms.
- Keep the energy balls in air tight container.
7. Yogurt Fruit Parfait
Ingredients:
- 1½ cup Homemade curd
- 2 tablespoon Honey
- 8-10 Strawberries, fresh or frozen
- 1 cup Mixed fruits chopped (kiwi, grapes, pomegranate, orange)
- ½ cup walnuts
Instructions:
- Add honey to the curd and whisk until it is creamy and smooth.
- Hull and chop the strawberries and run through a blender to get puree. Do not add water while doing so.
- Transfer walnuts to a zip lock bag and pat with a roller to crush them. We do not want a fine powder.
- Now take 2 tall dessert glasses to assemble the parfait.
- First add 2 tablespoon of strawberry puree to the glass.
- Top it with 2-3 tablespoon of whisked yogurt followed by a thick mixed fruit layer.
- Next add strawberry puree, followed by crushed walnut. Repeat the layers until the glass is full.
- Lastly garnish the parfait with strawberry slices and crushed walnuts.
- Serve immediately.
8. Frozen Yogurt Bark
Ingredients:
- 2 cups Hung curd
- 3-4 Strawberries, hulled and sliced
- 1 Kiwi fruit, peeled and sliced
- 4-5 Black grapes (seedless), cut into half lengthwise
- 2 tablespoon Honey
Instructions:
- Whisk hung curd with honey till smooth.
- Line a tray with parchment paper and spoon out the honey flavored hung curd over it.
- Spread out evenly using back of a spatula.
- Top it with sliced fruits and lightly press the fruits so they get embedded in the yogurt layer.
- Freeze the tray for 3-4 hours or overnight.
- Remove the tray. Allow it to stand at room temperature for 2-3 minutes.
- Tap the tray , loosen the sides using a knife.
- Remove the yogurt bark, break it into uneven pieces and serve.
9. Mango Lassi Ice Pops
Ingredients:
- 2-3 Peeled and chopped mangoes
- 1 tbsp Honey
- 1 cup Hung curd
Instructions:
- Blend the chopped mango with honey and hung curd till smooth.
- Pour the mango honey curd mix into Popsicle moulds and freeze till solid.
- Hold the mould under running water to release the pops.
10. Fresh Fruit Popsicles
Ingredients:
- 1 cup Coconut water
- 3-4 Fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
- 2 Kiwi fruits, peeled and sliced
Instructions:
- Arrange the fruits in the Popsicle molds.
- Pour just enough coconut water into each mold to cover up the fruit.
- Insert popsicle stick and freeze until frozen solid for about 2-3 hours.
- To remove the pops from the mold, just run the popsicle mold under warm water.
