Jamun: The Fruit of the Gods

The monsoon is slowly breezing in and we are happy for the respite from the summer heat. This also heralds the arrival of the juicy Java Plum or Jamun as it is commonly known.

This rich purple colored berry is native to India and has a myriad of health benefits. Jamun is quite juicy with a tart and sweet taste depending on the ripeness and leaves a sharp astringent aftertaste in the mouth. They are a great source of proteins, vitamins, antioxidants, flavonoids, potassium, manganese, phosphorous and calcium. They are high in glucose and water content while being low on calories, making it the perfect snack.

Benefits of Jamun

Jamun has a low glycemic index (GI) and is great for diabetics. It converts starch in the body into energy keeping blood sugar levels low.

The diuretic properties of this fruit keep the digestive system cool. It also contains fibre, which provides relief from constipation, diarrhea, etc. Jamun with roasted cumin seeds and black salt helps to treat acidity.

It is an excellent source of Vitamin C and boosts the immune system. It prevents respiratory infections like common cough, cold, asthma, etc. The antioxidant properties help in healing wounds and strengthen teeth, bone and cartilage.

Loaded with iron, jamun is highly beneficial for people suffering from anaemia. It purifies blood, increases red blood cells and haemoglobin count of blood. Jamuns keep you energized and help to recover from weakness and fatigue, and are highly recommended for menstruating women.

The high potassium content keeps the arteries clear, prevents their hardening to maintain heart health, reduces symptoms of high blood pressure, controls hypertension and reduces the risk of a stroke.

The phytochemicals in jamun juice reduces the risk of liver disease. Its diuretic properties flush toxins out of the kidneys.

Jamuns can be enjoyed raw or used in salads, juices, smoothies, sorbets, pies and jam. Even the leaves and pulp can be consumed in powder, pulp or capsule form. Pregnant women and breast-feeding mothers must consult their doctor before consuming it.

  1. Boil the quinoa under low flame and let it cool.
  2. Add in the diced mangoes, jamun and cucumber.
  3. Add black pepper powder, lemon juice and salt to taste. Add the olive oil and mix well.
  4. Enjoy!

Jamun Jam

Ingredients:

Method:

  1. Wash the jamuns thoroughly, remove the seeds and cut into small pieces.
  2. Boil the water and add the sliced jamuns.
  3. Add honey, cinnamon, cardamom and fennel powders.
  4. Stir continuously for 15-20 mins until the water evaporates and the jam thickens.
  5. Let it cool and store it in a clean glass jar.
  6. Refrigerate and use throughout the year!
