Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You were introduced to yoga at a very tender age and were said to possess “Rubber Spine” by your teacher, tell us how yoga happened & changed your life over the years. Challenges you faced.

Ms.Paloma Gangopadhyay

Coming from a family of yoga gurus and great teachers, my mother introduced me to yoga at the tender age of 6. Every Sunday she would take me to a local yoga shala in my locality where amazing teachers would guide me to a strict yoga regime. A couple of classes and I could do a full spine stretching upside down, touching my forehead on the floor. My guru named me rubber spine and pushed me to appear for the Bengal championship where I won the second position holding Ekpadashirasaha for a minute.

Recognition and appreciation made me so happy that I started going to my yoga class every single day and tried other advance postures. As I grew up , my interest in yoga therapy and yoga science increased but there was hardly any opportunity in Bengal that I could take up towards this profession. Being an academician my dad wanted me to pursue the IAS exam, and being a bright child, I took it up. When studying in the USA, I realized that yoga is my true calling.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have also studied yoga academically when your parents wanted you to take a more professional career, please share your area of specialization and problems you have observed to heal with yoga practice.

Ms. Paloma Gangopadhyay:

I hold my master’s degree in English literature and a gold medallist in the same. I went abroad, studied sports medicine, and science because there was no opportunity to study yoga. One fine day, I walked into a yoga studio in Los Angeles where my trainer from Australia, taught a yoga class so different from all the classes that I practiced in the past. Her knowledge in anatomy amazed me and I was inspired to study yoga therapy and science. I studied the concepts of hot yoga, anatomy, yoga therapy. I went to the self-realization fellowship, USA, and understood the philosophy of Paramhansa Yogananda. I started learning the science behind yoga. My studio was pragmatic yet philosophical, spiritual yet scientific. The west taught me to use yoga as a tool to help people to recover from so many diseases.

But sometimes people believed in medicine, more than naturalistic healing. It took me years to make people realize the true benefits of yoga and my journey is still on.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

According to you what is the best time to practice yoga, also should it be done in combination with HIIT workout? Ideal duration of a class.

Ms.Paloma Gangopadhyay:

Yoga is practised and benefited at its best early morning and twilight, when the mind, body and soul is calm and away from the hustle of everyday life. Yoga is best in the purest of its classical and traditional form.

A yoga practice can be anything between 40 minutes to an hour depending on the stamina of the practitioner.

Ms. Namita Nayyar:

You have worked as a yoga trainer for famous faces in the industry how you plan your class according to the different needs of the client. Share an experience or story of the client for visitors to identify that yoga does heal.

Ms. Paloma Gangopadhyay:

To me, teaching yoga is my worship. I have trained famous people from film industry to politics , bureaucracy, sports but one thing that my classes provides for all is the holistic wellness approach. I design the class according to the requirement of the student. With the fitness oriented postures I also keep asanas which heals the mind. We remember with physical beauty, mental well-being is equally important and yoga is a beautiful combination of the both. I work towards the specific fitness requirements of my clients and bring about a discipline in their daily lives and awareness about holistic living.

When a student walks into the door of my studio, he or she is no more a celebrity, they are all treated equally. Because yoga teaches you to let go of any ego and status. It is a unifying and harmonious feeling. In my class you will find doctors, engineers, musicians and lawyers all under one roof.

I remember meeting a student whose name was Vidya. She looked sad and lacked confidence. She was having serious health issues owing to her weight of 110 kg.  She came to me for a transformation, a new life. Within 8 months, I got her transformed into a completely new human being. She now weighs 70 kgs with the help of yoga and a good nutritious diet. So transformation is not only physical but it is an emotional and a psychological process. Now Vidya is confident, happy, and completely fit. Ready to rock her new world.
