Childhood Myopia: Key AIOS Recommendations Every Parent Should Know

Childhood myopia, commonly known as short-sightedness, is rapidly becoming a major public health concern across the world, including India. Increasing screen exposure, reduced outdoor play, prolonged near work, and academic pressure have contributed significantly to the growing number of children developing myopia at an early age.

Myopia Awareness Week 2026 takes place from May 18 to May 24, 2026. The global theme is “Start Early, Protect Vision for Life!” Recognizing this alarming trend, the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOC) released national consensus guidelines on the prevention and management of childhood myopia to help standardize care and encourage early intervention.

Key Recommendations from the AIOS Guidelines on Childhood Myopia

  • Encourage children to spend at least 2 hours outdoors daily to help reduce myopia progression.
  • Limit excessive screen time and prolonged use of digital devices.
  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Maintain proper reading distance, posture, and lighting while studying.
  • Reduce continuous near work, such as reading or gadget use, without breaks.
  • Ensure regular eye screening and eye check-ups for early detection of myopia.
  • Watch for warning signs like squinting, headaches, eye rubbing, or difficulty seeing distant objects.
  • Use appropriate prescription glasses or specialized lenses as advised by an eye specialist.
  • In progressive cases, doctors may recommend low-dose atropine eye drops to slow myopia progression.
  • Schedule regular follow-up visits to monitor changes in vision and eye growth.

Management options include prescription glasses, specialized lenses, and, in some cases, low-dose atropine eye drops to slow progression. Regular follow-ups with an eye specialist are essential for monitoring changes.

The AIOS guidelines stress that awareness, balanced lifestyle habits, and early intervention can play a major role in reducing the impact of childhood myopia and protecting children’s vision for the future.
