From a passionate home cook to a nationally recognized culinary talent, Masterchef Deepali Bihani and her journey are a celebration of creativity, courage, and self-belief. A former Top 9 contestant on MasterChef India, she beautifully blends her artistic instincts with her love for food, transforming simple ingredients into visually stunning and flavorful dishes.

In this candid conversation, Deepali Bihani shares her inspiring evolution, challenges, and the flavors that define her identity.

When did you realize that cooking was more than just a passion for you?

Deepali Bihani: A few years into my marriage, I began to see cooking as more than just a daily routine—it became an art form. Being an artist, I’ve always been drawn to colors, and I found the same vibrancy in food—the golden hue of turmeric, the deep red of chili, and the richness of spices. That connection sparked my culinary journey, and over time, cooking evolved into something deeply meaningful for me.

Congratulations on reaching the Top 9 on MasterChef India! What did this milestone mean to you?

Deepali Bihani: Thank you! Reaching the Top 9 was a life-changing moment. It transformed my identity—people began recognizing me, appreciating my recipes, and most importantly, it broadened my perspective towards food and creativity.

Being part of the first Jodi selected in the Top 12 is unique—how was that experience? Tell us about your winning dish.

Deepali Bihani: It was an incredibly proud moment to be selected as part of the first “Jodi” in the Top 12. For that round, I reimagined the traditional Rajasthani Dal Baati, presenting it in a modern and innovative way. The judges truly appreciated the concept, which made the experience even more special.

What did it feel like to be featured in Flavours of Home Chef magazine?

Deepali Bihani: It was an absolute honor. As a homemaker, being recognized on such a platform felt incredibly rewarding. It reaffirmed that passion and dedication can truly open doors.

How would you describe your cooking style in three words?

Deepali Bihani: Ingredients, Technique, and Taste.

Being both a chef and an artist, how does art influence your presentation and plating? Also, what are your signature dishes?

Deepali Bihani: Art plays a huge role in how I present my dishes. I believe food should not only taste good but also look visually appealing and have an impactful presentation. My signature creations include Thecha Paratha and Curry Leaf Chocolate—both reflecting my love for innovation and flavor.

What were the biggest obstacles you faced while transitioning from a home cook to a national platform?

Deepali Bihani: Stepping out of the comfort of home and entering a national platform was the biggest challenge. For a homemaker, it’s not an easy journey—there are many emotional and practical hurdles. But I faced each one with courage and determination, which helped me grow and reach where I am today.

One ingredient you can’t live without?

Deepali Bihani: Jeera (cumin seeds). I instinctively add a pinch of it to almost everything I cook.

One dish that still intimidates you?

Deepali Bihani: I’m not very comfortable cooking non-vegetarian dishes.

A chef you admire the most?

Deepali Bihani: Sanjeev Kapoor is my biggest inspiration. I consider him a mentor figure; his journey motivates me to grow and dream beyond my boundaries.
