Blueberry Shrikhand: Janmashtami Special

To celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna, people install the idols of baby Krishna at home on the day of Janmashtami, bathe them in milk, honey and water, dress them in new bright clothes, and prepare a 56 bhog thali (known as ‘Chappan Bhog’)as an offering to the deity. This time lets star blueberry Shrikhand.

Below we bring you a modified version of “mishti Dahi” to break the fast.

Blueberry Shrikhand

Blue Berries, being very rich in anti oxidants like Anthocyanin, vitamin C, B complex, vitamin Evitamin Acopper (a very effective immune builder and anti-bacterial), seleniumzinciron (promotes immunity by raising haemoglobin and oxygen concentration in blood) etc. boost up your immune system and prevent infections.

Ingredients

  • 3 cup Yogurt
  • 2 cups Organic blueberries
  • 1/4 – 1/2 cup almond, shelled and chopped
  • 1/2 – 1 cup Sugar (per taste)

Instructions

  • Tie Yogurt in a cheese cloth so that the excess water is drained. Though I kept it over night or 4 hours .
  • Take about 12-15 blueberries and make a puree out of it.
  • Use powdered sugar, gur or sugar grounded in a coffee grinder.
  • Transfer the yogurt into a container. The texture and consistency would be like whipped butter. Add powdered sugar and blueberry puree. Mix. Add the fresh blueberries, keeping some aside for garnishing. Add chopped almonds, leaving some for garnishing. Mix well and refrigerate it for a couple of hours.
  • Garnish it with dried blueberries, or fresh ones before serving.

Serve chilled with meal. Typically this dessert is eaten along with the meal, instead of at the end. But hey, there are no rules – you can eat the dessert anytime and any way you want

Happy Janmashtami!
